A new trend in the world of healthy living is adding coconut oil to coffee to reap the health benefits of both.
However, you may wonder if this practice is beneficial.
This article tells you whether you should drink coffee with coconut oil.
May Help You Stay in Ketosis
Coconut oil is becoming increasingly popular among people following the high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet.
Adding it to your coffee may help you achieve or maintain a state of ketosis.
Ketosis is a metabolic state in which your body uses ketones—molecules produced by the breakdown of fat—as an energy source instead of glucose ().
Maintaining a state of ketosis on a ketogenic diet has been associated with health benefits such as weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and reduced risk factors for cardiovascular disease (, ,).
Coconut oil can help you stay in ketosis because it contains fats called medium chain triglycerides (MCTs).
Compared to other fats, MCTs are quickly absorbed and immediately delivered to the liver. Here they are either used as a source of energy or converted into ketone bodies ().
Interestingly, MCT oils are more easily converted into ketones than long-chain triglycerides, another type of fat found in foods ().
Research shows that MCTs can help you stay in ketosis even if you eat slightly more protein and carbohydrates than recommended on the classic ketogenic diet ().
Coconut oil contains 4 types of MCTs, and 50% of its fat comes from the MCT lauric acid ().
Lauric acid appears to produce ketones at a slower but more sustained rate because it is metabolized more steadily than other MCTs. Therefore, adding coconut oil to your coffee is an effective way to help you stay in ketosis (, ).
Summary:
Coconut oil helps the body produce ketones. If you're following a ketogenic diet, adding it to a cup of coffee can help you achieve and stay in ketosis.
The magic of Bulletproof Coffee
Coffee with butter is not just another healthy lifestyle trend: it is a scientifically proven formula. This drink satisfies well, speeds up metabolism and relieves hunger for several hours. Its creator, scientist and businessman David Asprey, claims that thanks to Bulletproof he lost 45 extra pounds and increased his IQ by 20 points.
He was inspired to create this coffee by tsampa, a national Tibetan drink made from tea and yak milk butter. In 2004, Asprey was studying meditation in Tibet and, following the example of local monks, tried tsampa, after which he immediately felt the invigorating effect of the drink. As a result of culinary experiments, Asprey came up with the Bulletproof Coffee formula, which includes freshly brewed coffee, grass-fed butter and MCT oil (a fitness supplement for burning fat and growing muscles, a type of synthetic dietary fat made from coconut oil).
While I try to stay away from dairy to maintain healthy hormones and skin (in the US the dairy industry leaves much to be desired), I make an exception for high-quality ghee and grass-fed butter.
Health benefits and harms
Adding coconut oil to your coffee is an easy way to reap the health benefits.
Here are a few ways adding coconut oil to your coffee can improve your health:
- May speed up your metabolism . Research shows that the MCTs in coconut oil and the caffeine in coffee can speed up your metabolism, which can increase the number of calories you burn per day (, , ).
- May improve energy levels . Coffee contains caffeine, which can help you feel less tired. Coconut oil contains MCTs, which are transported directly to your liver and can also serve as a quick source of energy (,).
- May help improve intestinal motility . Coconut oil's MCTs and coffee compounds, such as caffeine and chlorogenic acids, may stimulate bowel function and keep the digestive system healthy (,).
- May help increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels . Several studies have shown that coconut oil may increase levels of HDL cholesterol, which protects against heart disease (, ).
However, adding coconut oil to coffee also has its downsides.
For starters, many people who add it to their morning coffee use it as a breakfast replacement. This means you may be missing out on many important nutrients that you would get by eating a more balanced breakfast.
Although coconut oil contains some nutrients, they are not as numerous as a nutrient-dense breakfast that contains many different food groups.
What's more, coconut oil is high in calories, providing 121 calories per tablespoon (14 grams). Most people who add it to their coffee usually use 2 tablespoons - an additional 242 calories ().
If that doesn't sound like much to you, consider that a 70kg person would need almost 50 minutes of brisk walking (5.6km/h) to burn that many calories ().
Plus, while the combined effects of coconut oil and coffee may speed up your metabolism a little, you're more likely to gain weight if you don't account for the added calories.
The calories in a few tablespoons of coconut oil will likely exceed the calories burned due to the slight increase in metabolism associated with MCTs and caffeine.
Moreover, some medical conditions, such as gallbladder problems or pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), may require you to limit your fat intake (,).
Coconut oil is much more effective when you use it to replace less healthy fats in your diet, such as those from processed foods, rather than when you add it to your diet in addition to other fats.
Summary:
Adding coconut oil to your coffee may provide health benefits. However, there are potential downsides to this, such as replacing more nutrient-dense foods and adding too many calories. Additionally, certain medical conditions may make it necessary to limit your fat intake.
What is Grass-Fed Butter?
Grass-Fed butter is made from the milk of cows that are fed only grass, not soy or feed corn. Due to this, butter does not contain harmful fats and helps normalize cholesterol levels.
First thing in the morning, I make my version of butter coffee, then go to yoga or use the energy of this magical drink to be productive. As a rule, this drink satiates you for 2-3 hours - just before late breakfast or early lunch. For some Bulletproof fans, the oil drink completely replaces breakfast, which is quite acceptable from the point of view of nutritionists. That's why butter coffee is a must-have part of my mornings.
Grass-Fed oil has the following beneficial properties.
- Contains conjugated linoleic acid, a healthy fat that helps regulate cholesterol, high blood pressure, and helps reduce body fat. Plus, this acid helps improve brain function and reduces the risk of developing nervous diseases.
- Contains an optimal proportion of omega-6 to omega-3 amino acids, which helps strengthen the body at the cellular level and reduce internal inflammation.
- Improves metabolism and digestion, accustoms your body to the process of burning excess fat.
- Contains vitamins D and K2, which strengthen bones and teeth.
Today, Bulletproof Coffee is on the menu of most progressive healthy eating establishments, especially the paleo eating style. The average price for one cup is $5–6. The good news is that a simplified version of butter coffee can be easily made at home. Ready to try? Here's my Bulletproof Coffee recipe.
How much coconut oil should I use?
If you want to try drinking coffee with coconut oil, start small by adding 1 tablespoon (14 grams) to your hot coffee and stirring thoroughly.
Some people prefer to blend coconut oil with coffee in a blender to create a delicious tropical-inspired drink.
Finally, you can add up to 2 tablespoons (28 grams) of coconut oil to your coffee if you want to increase your fat intake. This may be most suitable for those trying to achieve and maintain a state of ketosis.
Don't add too much coconut oil too quickly, especially if you are eating a low to medium fat diet, as this can cause nausea and a laxative effect.
Plus, 2 tablespoons (28 grams) is enough to reap the health benefits of this delicious, healthy fat (,).
Summary:
Start by adding 1 tablespoon (14 grams) of coconut oil to your hot coffee. You can slowly increase the amount of oil you add up to two tablespoons. Please note that adding too much coconut oil too quickly can cause unpleasant side effects.

Bulletproof Ingredients
Bulletproof contains enough oil to soften the bitterness of Robusta. But sugar is not added to the drink, so if there is more than 10–20% robusta in the blend, the cocktail will still be bitter. However, the most delicious coffee comes from 100% Arabica beans.
The oil makes light roasted beans taste too weak. It is better to use medium or dark roast coffee. They do not have to be freshly ground; store-bought ground coffee will do. The preferred grind is medium or slightly coarser. You need bottled water with a mineralization of 75–250 mg/l.
To prepare bullet proof, use the freshest possible (ideally organic) butter. You should not buy low-fat butter, since after eating it the feeling of hunger worsens. If the drink seems too high in calories, it is better to add a little less oil.
When purchasing coconut oil, you should choose food grade, not perfume oil.
General recommendations
To achieve the desired effect, you should follow a number of recommendations:
- before use, you need to heat the oil to 38–40°;

Application for lips, eyelashes
Nourishing oil is suitable for care not only for the face. Nourishes the delicate skin of the lips, protects against dryness and damage. Can be used as a base for makeup or added to liquid formulations, ensuring adequate nutrition and hydration.

During pregnancy, the oil will protect against stretch marks and stretch marks, and prevent dryness and flaking associated with hormonal changes.
A few more rules
Bronekoffee is an assistant in the fight against excess weight, and not a complete solution to the problem. There is no point in drowning it out with glasses and waiting for the centimeters to go away by itself. Without diet and exercise, no changes will happen. I wrote in previous posts how to make your diet healthier and more varied.
It's best to drink Bulletproof in the morning, when you need energy and strength the most. The rest of the diet should be rich in vitamins and fiber. Don't get carried away with the drink - one cup a day is enough.
Be prepared that the coffee will be greasy and unusual. Not everyone finds love the first time. If it doesn't suit you, it's okay. I have many more options in stock on how to drink (or eat) something and lose weight.
Directions for use on the face
Green coffee oil can be used in ready-made products and can also be used as a base for homemade recipes. It has a comprehensive effect on the skin, nourishes, cleanses, moisturizes, improves immune properties, and protects against exposure to aggressive environments.
Cream for aging skin
You can create your own cream that stops aging and fading of the skin. Saturates cells with nutrients and activates renewal processes. As a result, the skin becomes dense, elastic, the frame is restored, and the number and depth of wrinkles is reduced.
Components:

- 4 drops rosemary.
Melt shea butter in a water bath, remove from heat, add coffee oil and ether. Pour into the prepared jar and leave to harden. Use after cleansing; a minimal amount of cream is sufficient to treat the face. Apply along massage lines, blot off any unabsorbed residue after an hour.
Compresses for eyelids
It is useful to use nourishing compresses to care for thin, delicate eyelid skin at any age. Regular use eliminates puffiness, crow's feet, and dark circles. Lymph flow improves, allowing skin elasticity to be restored.
Components:
- 5 ml green coffee oil;
- 10 ml olive oil.
Heat olive and coffee oil in a water bath, cut 2 circles with a diameter of 5–6 cm from three-layer napkins. Soak in oils, place on eyelids after cleansing. After half an hour, remove the napkins. To achieve a visible effect, repeat the procedure in courses of 10–12 sessions.

Grind the buckwheat in a coffee grinder, crush the bodyaga in a mortar. Combine all ingredients, add a small amount of warm green tea. Clean your face, steam, distribute the cosmetic mixture in a circular motion. Leave for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water, apply cream according to your skin type.
Moisturizing mask
An excellent remedy for restoring hydrobalance and eliminating dry flaking. It has soothing properties, relieves itching and irritation. Application allows you to give a healthy, well-groomed appearance and prevent the appearance of wrinkles.
Components:
- 25 drops of coffee oil;
- half a cucumber;
- 10 gr. white clay.
Peel the vegetable and grate it on a fine grater. Add clay and cosmetic oil. Distribute on cleansed skin in a thick layer, rinse after 20 minutes. Repeat the procedure 2-3 times a week.
How to cook properly
All that remains is to find out how to make armored coffee and not overdo it with the ingredients, since an extra spoonful of some product can swing the pendulum in the wrong direction (for example, increase blood pressure above normal or add kilograms; the drink is, after all, quite fatty and high in calories). You can watch the video recipe above, just skip the point about whipped cream.
All calculations are based on one standard 250 ml .
- Take fresh ground grains (two level tablespoons) and mix with water.
- Cook in the usual way.
- Separately mix 20 grams of each type of oil.
- Mix the products and beat with a blender for 30 seconds (gives special airiness and makes foam).
- Pour into a cup and enjoy.
The most difficult thing in this recipe is not to add anything extra to the table: sugar, jams, buns. The drink is high in calories - about 400 kcal , so replace one meal with it (although you won’t want to eat it for a long time).
Advantages and disadvantages
The oil has a wide spectrum of action, providing comprehensive facial care. But before use, it is worth studying the characteristics of the natural product, its advantages, and disadvantages.
Pros:
- Suitable for all skin types;
- has rejuvenating, regenerating properties, soothes sensitive, irritated dermis;
- can be used throughout the year;
- You can evaluate the result after the first use;
- it is recommended to enrich ready-made cosmetics or create effective home recipes based on them;
- used to care for the face, body, and curls.
Minuses:
- contraindication is individual intolerance;
- high price.
Beneficial features
Natural antidepressant. Coffee bean oil actively fights stress, negative mood and depression. To improve your mental well-being, it is not necessary to use an aroma lamp. It will be enough to dip a crumpled piece of cotton wool in the aroma oil and place it next to you.
The strongest antioxidant. Coffee extract is often used to combat free radicals. These harmful substances contribute to the development of various diseases, and also reduce the body's protective functions and have a negative impact on overall health. Moreover, after a series of studies, it turned out that coffee tree oil extract reduces the likelihood of cirrhosis and activates liver function.
From mosquito bites and other insects. The spring-summer period is replete with a variety of insects that are unpleasant for every person, because their bites itch, turn red, and in some cases swell and even cause severe allergies. To protect yourself and your home from the invasion of flies and other insects, it is enough to arrange a coffee aromatherapy session, but most often they use other more effective essential oils against mosquitoes and bites.
Fights attacks of nausea. In case of nausea, it is better to replace harmful medications with coffee oil. Some people carry a bottle of this valuable product with them all the time so that they can use it during the next attack of vomiting.
Eliminates runny nose. The aroma oil copes well with a runny nose and stuffy nose. The essential aroma of coffee relieves mucus, making every breath easier and freer. So, to remove the unpleasant signs of a cold, just inhale the coffee aroma several times. Therefore, coffee is often included in medicines; for example, Citramon, Coldrex and Rinza contain caffeine.
Air freshener. If you need to eliminate an unpleasant odor or simply refresh the room, then the tart aroma of coffee is perfect as a deodorizing agent. The oil will quickly absorb the unpleasant aroma and fill the room with an invigorating and fresh smell.
Where is the best place to buy
You can purchase oil at a natural cosmetics store, pharmacy, or place an order online. The cost of 30 ml is from 450 to 700 rubles, it is better to choose well-known brands whose manufacturers indicate quality certificates. A high-quality product is sold in a dark glass bottle with a dispenser or pipette.
It should be stored at a temperature of 5–25°, protected from sunlight. Retains beneficial properties for 2 years. You can distinguish a spoiled product by the appearance of rancid notes; the aroma of fresh coffee oil is rich and homogeneous.
