What you need to know about frappe
It is believed that frappe was invented by a representative of the Nescafe company named Dimitris Vakondios in 1957 in Thessaloniki. In Greece, frappe is one of the most popular drinks and is available in almost all Greek cafes.
The word frappe comes from the French word frapper, which means to hit like crushed ice when mixed with a drink and shaken in a shaker. Frappe became the hallmark of post-war Greek coffee culture.
In itself, it is not exactly coffee. This is a type of thick cocktail that is served cold. You can add different syrups and ice cream to them. All components must be shaken with a shaker or mixer.
Drink properties:
- The calorie content of frappe prepared according to the classic recipe does not exceed 2 kcal per serving. If 1 teaspoon of sugar is added to coffee, the calorie content increases to 20-22 kcal. Any additives - cream, milk - increase the calorie content of a serving.
- The caffeine content in a cup of frappe ranges from approximately 60 to 120 mg, depending on the type of coffee beans.
- has a pronounced coffee taste Instant coffee frappe may taste slightly sour.
- Frappe coffee is often served as a cooling drink on hot days. The low temperature of coffee can slow down digestion, so you shouldn't drink it after meals. It's better to treat yourself to an iced coffee taste in between meals. Coffee reduces appetite, which is why it is loved by those who have to adhere to dietary restrictions.
Frappe is made on the basis of ordinary espresso, only crushed ice is added. The drink is low-calorie and suitable for those who are watching their figure. In hot weather it is an excellent thirst quencher due to its refreshing qualities. In winter it will be good with honey, chocolate or nuts.
Properties and calorie content of the drink
Frappuccino has a general tonic effect on the body and increases performance due to the nutritional value of its ingredients. 1 serving of this dessert contains at least 400 kcal, so its consumption is considered a complete meal.
However, doctors do not recommend enjoying it more than once a day: from 60 to 150 g of caffeine in combination with cream, milk and sugar put a strain on the body.
The modern coffee industry provides a replacement for high-calorie ingredients: instead of cow's milk, for example, you can order a cocktail made with coconut and soy milk or remove sugar.
The drink is quite high in calories.

From the history of occurrence
Its name was borrowed from French, which translates as “broken.” All drinks containing ice have been so named since the 19th century. For example, coffee with ice and ice cream was called “frappe a la glace.” Over time, the meaning of this type of drink transformed into “chilled”. His date of birth is considered to be October 7, 1957.
Participating in the fair, which was held in Thessaloniki, Greece, that day the Nestlé company showed the world chocolate powder that quickly dissolves in chilled milk. One of the employees of this company, Dimitris Vakondios, wanted to pour hot water into his coffee during his lunch break, but could not find it anywhere. Then he mixed Nescafe instant coffee powder and granulated sugar in a shaker, poured it with ice water and mixed. The resulting soft drink with luxurious foam turned out to be to everyone's taste.
In the northern countries, perhaps no one would have noticed the birth of a new ice drink, but in Greece it turned out to be a real find. For cooling, pieces of ice were added to its composition. The word for the name of the new product was borrowed from French speech.

Since 2002, Starbucks has released a new Frappuccino every spring, matching flavors to the colors that hit the runway. And connoisseurs and regular customers of the coffee shop know how to get a special, secret cocktail (for example, inspired by the new “Joker”).
The variety of flavors is due to the use of toppings, syrups and other additives with which the dessert is prepared. However, there are 3 main types of Frappuccino (besides the classic one), which are in great demand among buyers.
Easy
It is prepared with skim milk and cream substitute with a minimum percentage of fat content, which reduces the calorie content of the drink by 54%, the fat content by 15%, and carbohydrates by 52%.

Cafein free
It is prepared according to a traditional recipe, the only difference is the use of a decaffeinated base.
Frappuccino cream
It is prepared without coffee, on a creamy base, which consists of sugar, thickening agents, flavorings and other ingredients. This is a dessert in its purest form - it resembles pudding due to the fact that the milk is foamed with a special cappuccino maker.
There are also 2 more types of cold cocktails:
- Vegetarian - for its preparation, dairy products are replaced with plant-based analogues.
- Tazoberi - Instead of espresso, Tazo tea is used as a base. Juices and fruit toppings are also added to the cocktail.

Cooking features
To prepare frappe, you can use both brewed and instant coffee. At home, the soluble variety is more often used, as it forms a characteristic foam better. Most of the drink is crushed ice or cold water. Because of this, frappe is often consumed during diets. Cool the hot espresso, pour it into a shaker or blender, add ice, and beat thoroughly until a fluffy foam forms.
To diversify the taste of the drink, various toppings and sweeteners are often added to it. For example, honey, ice cream, chocolate, liqueur, fruits, nuts, cream and much more. Coffee goes well with spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger; they soften the taste of the drink. It is important to prepare the frappe immediately before consumption. A drink prepared in advance will lose its taste and aroma.

How to Serve and Drink Frappe Coffee
Frappe is served in tall glass glasses or Irish coffee glasses. A straw must be served with coffee, and if the drink is decorated with artificial cream, then a spoon.
Frappes go well with berries, desserts based on mascarpone, whipped cream, chocolate, biscuits or shortbread.
Frappe coffee contains a lot of caffeine, so it is recommended to drink it slowly, in small sips. You should not drink more than one serving of frappe per day: it is harmful to the throat.
Contraindications and recommendations
Frappuccino is recommended for people with hypotension, poor appetite, and migraines. The caffeine contained in the dessert has a positive effect on blood vessels and stimulates lung function.
The drink is contraindicated for hypertension, mild excitability, and a tendency to insomnia.
You should drink it carefully if you have a sore throat and refrain from eating dessert before donating blood (the test results may be distorted).
If a person is allergic to components or lactose intolerant, the ingredients can be replaced. The modern coffee industry allows the use of skim, lactose-free, soy or coconut milk.
Difference between Frappe and Frappuccino
The Frappuccino was invented by a Starbucks barista. It is a cross between frappe and cappuccino. Although Frappuccinos and Frappes are both espresso-based and served cold, there are differences between them.
All components of a Frappuccino, including ice, must be whipped. This is the main fundamental difference.
When making a frappe, you can improvise and add almost any ingredients, but frappuccino, on the contrary, has a strict preparation standard invented by Starbucks. Its serving is 460 ml and necessarily contains doppio, sugar and chilled milk.
What then is a Frappuccino? Or is it the same as frappe?
Now that's a good question! This is what confused me too. Before we get into the actual description, it helps to understand that Frappuccino is made up of two words - frappe (pronounced frap and without an accent) and cappuccino .
In the Boston area, where the drink originated, frappe is a thick milkshake topped with ice cream.
The Frappuccino, a drink made by combining a milkshake with coffee, was developed, trademarked and sold by The Coffee Connection, an eastern Massachusetts coffee shop. When Starbucks acquired The Coffee Connection in 1994, they also gained the right to manufacture, market and market the drink as a Frappuccino.
They changed the recipe slightly, introduced it under the Starbucks banner, and it remains a very popular drink on their menu to this day. The recipe itself is a blend of several different cold brews such as ice coffee, milkshake, Italian cappuccino, and other flavors and syrups. Starbucks also sells bottled versions of its Frappuccino in grocery stores and vending machines.
So you see, Frappe and Frappuccino are not related at all!
Where is frappe made?
The classic recipe can most often be found in the south of Europe - in Greece, sometimes in France or Spain, although there it is often called simply iced coffee. But in Cyprus you can taste the best frappe coffee in the world. So, at least, the Cypriots themselves say, sincerely considering the drink to be their national pride.
In the rest of Europe, the recipe has undergone significant modifications to suit local tastes. For the most part, it turned into a regular coffee shake with milk, syrup and crushed ice.
In Russian coffee shops you can encounter a wide variety of creative processing. So, before ordering a frappe coffee, be sure to find out what is hidden under this name in a particular coffee shop or bar. Sometimes frappe on the menu may be called Greek coffee.
The Greek approach to making frappe
In Greece there are three levels of frappe sweetness:
- Glykos (γλυκός, sweet)
2 teaspoons coffee and 4 teaspoons sugar.
- Metrios (μέτριος, middle)
2 teaspoons coffee and 2 teaspoons sugar.
- Skétos (σκέτος, ordinary)
2 teaspoons coffee without sugar.
All types can be served with condensed milk, in which case they can be called frapogalo (φραπόγαλο, Greek pronunciation: [fraˈpoɣalo], "frappe-milk").
Sometimes frappe is served without water (other than the water used in the foam) and milk is used instead. This option is most often found in Cyprus.
Kahlúa, Baileys Irish Cream and other coffee liqueurs are sometimes used to add further variation to the drink.
Let's sum it up
- Frappe is cold coffee, whipped with ice or very chilled water until foam appears.
- Low in calories, caffeine content is approximately equal to a standard shot of espresso.
- It invigorates and cools well.
- Can be consumed in the first half of the day, between meals.
- The taste is rich, the aroma is weak.
- Can be prepared at home.
- Coffee shops under this name can serve a variety of cocktails based on coffee, milk, toppings and ice.
Origin of the drink
The iced coffee cocktail in question is a relatively recent invention. For this reason, we know in detail not only the history of frappe, but also the date, place, and even the name of the creator.
The drink was first prepared by a Greek named Dimitrios Vakondios, who worked at one of the fair stands owned by Nestle. This happened in the summer of 1957 in hot Greek Thessaloniki.
Like many wonderful inventions, frappe was invented due to a coincidence. The enterprising young man's working day was long and the day was hot, so Dimitrios decided to cheer himself up with a portion of instant granulated coffee, which he loved very much. But, as luck would have it, there was no hot boiling water anywhere at the fair to brew the drink in the traditional way. But he had a shaker at his disposal, and the guy simply mixed coffee and sugar in it, pouring them with ordinary cold water.
In the process, the Greek got carried away with the preparation and added a few more ice cubes to the shaker. He really liked the finished result: the drink was cold and refreshing, invigorating, and at the same time did not seem strong in taste. In addition to these advantages, the whipped coffee was topped with high foam, giving the drink an attractive appearance.
This is how the traditional version of this cocktail appeared, which is prepared from instant coffee. After the popularization of the drink, other recipes appeared using natural ground Arabica and Robusta beans, for example, an exquisite mocha frappe.
On a note! Frappe, made from instant coffee, tastes slightly sour. Natural varieties give the drink noble nutty notes.
Where is frappe made?
Despite the fact that the cocktail was first prepared in Greece, it quickly spread throughout the world. It is especially popular in southern Europe, where the hot climate contributes to the popularity of soft drinks. In Cyprus, for example, frappe is considered a traditional delicacy - the islanders themselves are sure that no one in the world knows how to make this cocktail tastier than they do.
They drink frappe in Portugal, Spain, and Malta, and, of course, they love it in France. Moreover, in each country the cocktail is prepared a little differently, adding fruit or replacing milk with creamy ice cream.
On a note! Sometimes on the menu this cocktail is simply called: Greek coffee.
An integral feature of cocktails in all countries is such an ingredient as crushed - crushed or granulated - ice. In some places they use a special frappe ice maker to get it, in others they use a simple shaker. To make a cocktail at home, you can use an ordinary blender or even just break the ice with a rolling pin.
