Coffee Lavazza – review of the Italian brand

Many people have probably noticed it on supermarket shelves, and some have tried the delicious aromatic Lavazza coffee. This Italian drink differs from others in its noble taste and excellent aroma. A huge assortment and the perfect combination of grains is the main feature of the Lavazza brand. Today we will learn about the varieties of Lavazza coffee and its description.

History of the drink

history of the company

It all started with the decision of Luigi Lavazzo, who came from a farming family, to start his own business. In 1895 he came to Turin and opened a grocery store. The friendly and enterprising owner of the food store was quickly remembered, and the number of regular customers grew. And Luigi in the evenings, looking through the remaining reserves of olive oil, cereals and spices, inhaled the aroma of coffee beans.

Bags of coffee stood in the darkest corner, and when Señor Lavazzo looked at them, he began to dream of distant countries, where dark-skinned women in bright outfits collected dark red fruits from narrow-leaved trees.

At that time, no one could offer better and more delicious coffee. Therefore, the small grocery store quickly grew into the world's most famous coffee company. The dawn of this enterprise came in the post-war period. In 1947, the brand's current logo was invented. Despite Luigi's death in 1949, coffee sales not only did not decline, but increased so much that in the late 1950s. the company acquired its own coffee roasting plant.

Now Lavazza has become the largest coffee producer in the world. The company produces many types of it with an excellent blend, differing from each other in the percentage of different types of coffee in one package.

The company opened a branch abroad in 1982, in Paris, and in 1990, in order to popularize Italian coffee in the British capital, it created Lavazza Coffees Ltd.

The process of conquering the world continues today:

  • in 2014, Lavazza, together with Illycaffè, took part in an experiment - sequencing the genome of Arabica coffee;
  • in 2020, the leading coffee brand in the Baltic countries and Denmark, MERRILD, was added to the company and an Australian distribution company was purchased;
  • in 2020, the French Carte Noire with its plant in Occitania became part of the Lavazza Group of Companies, which allowed the Italian brand to occupy a strategic position in the fifth coffee market in the world - French;
  • in 2020, the large North American retail chain KICKING HORSE COFFEE was acquired.

According to the world ranking, oil is in the first position of the most sold goods, and coffee is in second, with the rest far behind. Lavazza also deserves credit for this arrangement.

The history of the famous Lavazza brand

LAVAZZA is the most famous Italian coffee company, whose history dates back to the end of the 19th century. Its founder, Luigi Lavazza, started the business with a small grocery store in Turin. Senor Lavazza began creating coffee blends, experimenting with a combination of the best varieties of Arabica and Robusta, roasting coffee beans immediately before sale.

Glass coffee cup

Already by the 30s of the XX century. the family company was the best coffee producer in Italy, sales volumes increased rapidly, and fame grew outside the country.

It was Lavazza that was one of the first in the world coffee market and the first in Italy to use vacuum packaging for its products, which made it possible to perfectly preserve the original taste and aroma of coffee blends.

Lavazza in numbers

The Lavazza company uses coffee from the best plantations for its magnificent blends, plus modern bean roasting technology, proprietary multi-layer light-protective packaging with a one-way valve that prevents the penetration of oxygen and moisture - all this provides the unique taste and aroma characteristic of Lavazza coffee.

  • 27 billion cups of Lavazza coffee are consumed worldwide every year.
  • 1.9 billion euros - annual turnover.
  • 90 countries in which the company has branches and a distribution network.
  • 3,000 employees.
  • 6 enterprises: 3 Italian factories and 1 French, two hubs - Brazilian and Indian, to serve local markets.
  • 50 Training Center Lavazza, where every year 30 thousand clients, journalists and bloggers learn the intricacies of making espresso and study the history of coffee.
  • 60.3% of the company's income comes from foreign markets.

How does it affect the human body?

Drinking the drink affects the central nervous system. So one cup of Luwak coffee can increase a person’s productivity by 10-12%. This fact was confirmed by the American College of Sports Medicine research center.

Coffee also helps with your figure. The drink discourages cravings for foods that contain a lot of calories, and the caffeine itself helps fat cells break down faster.

Drinking coffee also stimulates brain activity.

The product itself does not make a person smarter, it “awakens” the intellect and pushes it to work.

It also has a positive effect on the immune system: the drink relieves inflammation and prevents infection from entering the body. So the positive effect of Luwak coffee on a person cannot be underestimated or ignored.

Interesting facts about the brand

Since 1989, when the company offered the world the Lavazza Espresso Point system - a coffee machine using pods (Italian: cialda - tablet), disposable bags of ground coffee, vending machines have filled offices and public places - shops, train stations.

In 2004, the expansion effect intensified: Lavazza BLUE appeared on the market - a new espresso preparation system for offices, with a self-protecting capsule, which made the drink even easier to prepare and more popular.

In the forties, at one of the meetings at the Circolo degli Artisti, Beppe Lavazzo, always interested in art and keen on photography, met the artist and ordered him a collection of advertising postcards. The deal was so successful that orders began to be repeated regularly, although they made offers to different artists.

Photographer Thierry Le Goux, who took part in the creation of the 2004 calendar, created a work in which a cup of Lavazza espresso flies into space.

Ten years later, in 2014, Le Goux’s fantasies came true: Italian Samantha Cristoforetti became the first astronaut to drink coffee in orbit. The International Space Station installed ISSpresso, the first capsule espresso machine named after the International Space Station (ISS) to operate successfully in the extreme conditions of space.

Lavazza's partner in this project was the Italian engineering company Argotec, which designs aerospace systems.

Animals that ferment coffee

In addition to musangs, elephants can ferment coffee. The animals' diet includes vegetables, fruits, and sugar cane. Veterinarians ensure that the concentration of caffeine in the blood of animals does not exceed the norm.

Brazilians obtain fermented grains with the help of gray parrots. The birds' diet includes local fruits and nuts. Residents of South America prefer to create conditions close to natural for their parrots, so the taste and smell of coffee from the farm is almost no different from wild coffee.

Fermentation of grains can occur in the digestive system of some species of monkeys. Coffee varieties derived from primates are considered less elite than Luwak.

How Lavazza coffee is prepared in Italy

Italians learned to brew invigorating coffee a long time ago; it has already become a tradition for them. Most often they brew espresso in a coffee maker. The drink is also prepared in a Turk and milk is added instead of water.

In Italian coffee shops, real espresso is served in small cups, filled halfway to fully reveal its taste and aroma.

Many Italians drink iced coffee by cooling the brewed drink and combining it with milk, sugar and whipped cream.

Lavazza based drinks

  • Latte – milk is added to the finished espresso;
  • Cappuccino – brewed with high thick foam, decorated with grated chocolate;
  • Americano is prepared in a coffee maker;
  • Lungu is brewed with double the amount of water, this produces strong and aromatic coffee;
  • Mocha - consists of one part espresso, hot chocolate, milk and cream;
  • Coretto - espresso with the addition of bourbon;
  • Glace – made from espresso and ice cream, served as a dessert;
  • Mochiato is a drink made from espresso and milk;
  • Romano – brewed with lemon juice.

Reviews about the manufacturer Lavazza:

In Italian coffee shops you can find a wide range of coffee drinks, differing in recipes. It is difficult to find certain types of flaws in the reviews of fans of the brand: almost all blends find their admirers.

Important!

A large percentage of Robusta indicates astringency in taste, pure Arabica is more delicate. But to select “your” variety you will have to experiment.

Mocha, macchiato, coretto (with alcohol), Romano or glace - any drink with grains from the Italian company turns out delicious and unforgettable. Should you put off the true pleasure of coffee?

How to choose the right Lavazza coffee

Some unscrupulous manufacturers may produce counterfeits instead of natural coffee by mixing cheap varieties. Usually, when buying an original Italian product, you need to pay attention to some features.

How to distinguish a fake?

  1. If you want to buy real Lavazza, you need to go to a specialized store.
  2. Pay attention to the integrity of the packaging so that there are no strong dents or breaks.
  3. Each package must have a certain valve through which carbon dioxide escapes.
  4. Pay attention to the date of manufacture and country of origin.
  5. All grains in the package must be the same size and whole.

The Lavazza brand has a rich assortment, so every lover of an invigorating drink will choose the coffee that suits their taste.

Unfortunately, on the shelves you can often find not original Italian coffee, but low-quality counterfeit coffee. To avoid wasting your money, you should pay attention to the following aspects when purchasing:

  • It is best to purchase coffee in a specialty store, even if the prices there are slightly higher than in the supermarket.
  • Vacuum packaging of coffee must be absolutely flat, without bends or creases.
  • Look carefully at the packaging: the date of manufacture must be on the side, and the information must indicate the country of origin of the coffee beans.
  • The packaging must have a special valve for the release of carbon dioxide. It must have a cut along the edges or in the middle.
  • Coffee beans should be approximately the same size, even in shape, and whole.

This drink brings unforgettable pleasure. Make your choice: Lavazza coffee beans or ground. In any case, this drink will pleasantly delight you with its taste and aroma. It will make your morning invigorating and your meeting over a cup of coffee unforgettable!

For making espresso, the following Lavazza varieties are better suited:

  • Qualita Oro;
  • Grand Espresso;
  • Espresso;
  • Gran Riserva;
  • Qualita Rossa.

Without harm to health

Not everyone can drink drinks containing caffeine for health reasons. As a rule, they are contraindicated in the presence of pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular system. Neglecting medical recommendations can cause significant harm to your health. But you don’t have to completely give up coffee. You just need to choose the right variety of Lavazza.

Decaffeinatto in this case will be a real find. It contains Arabica and Robusta beans processed using special technology. The caffeine content in them is reduced to almost zero. At the same time, the taste and aroma remain exactly the same as when using the classic version.

Luwak price

Nowadays, you can freely purchase coffee with an image of a palm marten on the packaging. The lowest cost of the product is two dollars for five hundred grams of product. But, unfortunately, such a pack contains only about one percent of high-quality grains, and there may be none at all. Counterfeits supplied to the market by unscrupulous bean producers often include regular black coffee fermented using an artificial method.

How much does natural Luwak coffee cost? It is mixed with Robusta and released for sale, the price will depend on the content of Luwak in the mixture. A Vietnamese product in its natural form will cost about one thousand dollars.

Today in Moscow you can buy it at a price of four thousand rubles per hundred grams of the product.

Reviews from people

The best coffee from Lavazza, for me personally, is TopClass. Great chocolate taste and wonderful aroma.

I recently tried Qualita Rossa for the first time in my life and was captivated. This is simply a miracle drink. It not only gives you energy, but also lifts your spirits. Real, high quality coffee.

I am an experienced coffee lover, but after trying Crema e Gusto, I can’t drink any other coffee. Nothing can spoil it, even if you don’t know how to brew coffee.

I just love Grand Espresso. After a morning cup of this coffee, I'm ready to move mountains. The main thing is to buy from trusted places so as not to run into a fake. But, in general, the coffee is great!

Do you want a legend in the best Asian traditions?

Telling how the amazing properties of Luwak coffee were unexpectedly discovered.

It is believed that musangs choose only the most delicious grains.

A terrible disaster befell one peasant family: wild musangs completely ate the harvest of ripe grains for sale. But the Vietnamese miraculously discovered undigested grains and were able to obtain coffee from animal feces. Extreme poverty forced the peasants to wash this find and, after roasting it, put it up for sale as regular coffee. And their surprise was great, because an incredibly delicious taste was obtained!

Third century of development

The second millennium was a time of new discoveries for Lavazza. Work is in full swing on the new Lavazza Blue flavor using the extraction principle, which will give the coffee drink an extraordinary aroma and velvety feel. The beginning of the 2000s will also be marked by the opening of the charitable foundation “Giuseppe and Pericles Lavazza Foundation” and the creation of new subsidiaries. The largest network of Lavazza coffee distributors continues to develop. Lavazza does not forget about capsule coffee; it becomes available to everyone and is sold in every supermarket around the world. In 2010, Emilio Lavazza dies and the era of the fourth generation of the Lavazza brand ends. This man was a kind and fair manager; it was he who developed the concept of friendly relations in the team. Find out what Lavazza is all about today. The third part of the article is linked here!
