The most expensive coffee in the world

A certain variety of Kopi Luwak coffee grows on the islands of Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi (Indonesia). Because of its surprisingly delicate and velvety taste, this drink has gained fame among true gourmets and is by far the most expensive coffee in the world. Now you know! The name of the variety, in fact, determines its main feature - not only people participate in the production process, but also, whoever you think, representatives of the local flora. Luwak is a small animal of the civet family.

He is interesting because he understands coffee beans better than anyone else, and selects the ripest berries of the highest quality for his own diet. It's like a mongoose coffee. We won’t go into details, let’s just say that the animal eats them first. Well, then... it produces... the product. The path through the civet's digestive tract does not actually harm the coffee beans. The only point is that the enzymes in his stomach slightly soften the grains and allow them to subsequently reveal richer organoleptic characteristics. So, everything is not just like that! The grains are collected, thoroughly washed (thank God) and roasted first in the sun and then in special ovens.

For many, this business has become not just a way to earn a living, but also a relatively prosperous life, by local standards. No more than 1,000 pounds of Kopi Luwak coffee enters the world market per year. The cost per kilogram of fried berries can range from $300 to $600. At retail, a cup of Kopi Luwak costs approximately $35-40. If desired, every coffee lover can fork out for a cup of a mega-exotic variety, but not everyone who can drink such a drink every day without financial difficulties finds the courage to try it. The long journey that the most expensive coffee beans have traveled seems too... “thorny” for many.

Coffee in English

Since India became a British colony, the tradition of drinking tea has been firmly established in the United Kingdom. All over the world they know about the English tradition of drinking tea at five o`clock, forgetting that this drink was borrowed from a foreign country. Over time, another drink came into English culture and assimilated there, becoming an integral part of everyday life - English coffee.

Coffee appeared in England in the middle of the 17th century and quickly spread thanks to Oxford students. To advertise this drink, coffee houses were created - indeed, entire buildings dedicated to the preparation and consumption of coffee. Currently, a whole culture of English coffee consumption has developed in Great Britain, which is firmly integrated into the dynamic life of busy large cities and small cozy settlements. By the way, if you are lucky enough to visit Foggy Albion and you decide to order coffee with milk in a cafe, then you will need to ask for “white coffee” - this is an unusual name it has in the UK.

What is the secret of making coffee in English? Faced with a rich selection of varieties, the British, without further ado, decided to mix different types of coffee in one cup. English coffee is a mixture that is prepared in advance in decent quantities and stored in airtight jars in the refrigerator. For the mixture, equal amounts of two different varieties are used: Colombian and Indian. The second variety can be replaced with Ethiopian, Brazilian or any other. Another necessary ingredient is figs. If you drink coffee infrequently, we recommend taking 100 g. coffee and 60 gr. figs (2-3 pieces). The washed and grated figs are cut into small pieces and then fried without oil in a frying pan. It is necessary to achieve a completely dry, but not burnt state. You can try doing this in the oven over low heat (no more than 150 degrees) or in a convection oven.

The coffee and figs are then mixed and ground to a medium grind size. In an airtight container and at a low temperature, this mixture will remain aromatic for two months, so you should not prepare a large volume at once if you drink coffee irregularly. There is another recipe for English coffee, this time in a cold version. It is necessary to brew coffee in a Turk in the usual way, then strain and pour into a tall thick glass. A scoop of ice cream and a top of whipped cream are also added there. This drink is pleasant to drink on a clear summer day, and it does not require other sweeteners.

If you liked the recipes and are already thinking about how to visit London in your dreams, don’t waste time and start improving your English right with a cup of freshly prepared English coffee.

How to make coffee correctly

Without a copper Turk, this activity makes no sense at all, so if at a party you are offered coffee brewed in a coffee machine or, God forbid, in some saucepan, you can snort contemptuously and ask “in that case” for tea. If you are lucky and have a Turk, then finally brew the right coffee for the amateurs! Show them some skill!

  • First, lightly fry the grains or powder in a pan without oil (7-10 seconds).
  • After this, grind it to a powder, pour it into a pot (a teaspoon for every 50 ml of water) and pour boiling water over it. Don't overdo it with water! The pot should only be filled halfway, otherwise everything may boil over and they will laugh at you and force you to wash the stove.
  • Immediately add sugar to taste, place the Turk over low heat and wait until the foam rises to the edge of the vessel. Don't let the drink escape, remove it from the heat and pour in a few drops of cooled boiled water. And so, 5 times.
  • Try the coffee first, so that if it fails, you “accidentally” throw it into the sink and refuse to brew a new one.

Here's what else you can do with coffee:

to grind - grind to pour some coffee - pour coffee to make coffee - brew coffee to serve - serve to stir - stir (with a spoon) degas - degas, vacuum coffee to go - takeaway coffee to talk over a cup of coffee – chat over a cup of coffee

Coffee drinking traditions

Europe's first coffee house, or coffee house, was opened in Oxford. The drink quickly became a success among university teachers and senior students. For a long time, only young people drank coffee, but it soon became an important attribute of clubs, whose members eventually brought the drink into their homes.

Women were initially outraged by the new tradition and even wrote an angry petition to the government. It was noted that men spend little time at home, but more and more in clubs and are not ready to fulfill their marital duty because of coffee. In the end, the women were calmed down, and they themselves created clubs for drinking the drink.

Historical cooking methods were nothing special. The grains were ground, poured with cold water and brought to a boil. Coffee was prepared in small saucepans with long handles, which were nicknamed “English Turks”. A coffee pot was placed on the table and the drink was poured into cups.

Most English recipes can be called an exotic product. The British adopted many ideas from the Indians and other eastern inhabitants.

Hold your mug correctly

How should you hold your mug to minimize the risk of spilling coffee on yourself? Secret. But we will tell you. A study published on ScienceDirect, "The Spilled Coffee Phenomenon," by Zhivon Khan, explains why coffee tries to spill out of your mug when you least expect it. That is, almost always! Having made a series of complex calculations with the physical properties of the liquid and the frequency of vibrations, Zhivon calculated that the mug (the scoundrel) was to blame for everything! Or rather, its shape. The researcher conducted experiments with different shapes of dishes and came to the conclusion that a mug is the most inconvenient device for carrying coffee in it. But, if you are not yet ready to be known as the most extravagant person in the office and drink coffee from a glass, Zhivon Khan has a solution for you too.

Instead of holding the mug by the handle, it should be held from above with a strong grip. Sort of like a tiger-claw-hand-method. This method reduces the amplitude of coffee vibration, and with it the likelihood that the drink will leave the mug and end up on the floor, or on your papers in the office, on new pants, a skirt, or a clown costume.

Hold the mug as shown in the photo, and your coffee will always be in the cup, says the scientist. He also claims that if you do not walk straight, but back away, then the likelihood of spilling coffee is also significantly lower. But this, of course, is if you don’t stumble.

Recipes

Coffee is a self-sufficient drink, but we know how to make it better. Here are 2 unexpected recipes that turn coffee into an elixir of strength and health. Okay, one recipe. The second one is simply delicious.

Coffee with cheese Difficulty of preparation: 2 Benefits: 3 Taste: 4

If you've never tried Lapland bread cheese, here's a great opportunity. You can buy it online or, if you can find it in Finland, in your nearest store. This cheese with a delicate sweetish taste is cut into small pieces and poured with hot coffee. The dessert is called kaffeost, that is, coffee cheese. In fact, this is not coffee, but a whole breakfast! Cheese contains many vitamins, proteins, fats, proteins, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, mineral salts, etc. Moreover, cheese protein is absorbed much better than milk protein. Cheese has a positive effect on the skin, stimulates metabolism, and participates in growth processes. The only harm of the Lapland breakfast is that it is very high in calories. This dish is not recommended for people with high cholesterol and atherosclerosis, as well as for people who are overweight.

Coffee with yolk and rum Difficulty of preparation: 3 Benefit: 0 Taste: 5

The first part of the recipe is pretty boring: brew the coffee and fill the cups three-quarters full. But the next step is more interesting: mix two yolks, two teaspoons of brown sugar and 50 grams of rum in a blender. Voila! Pour the resulting mixture into cups and serve with whipped cream. Let's not get bogged down about the harm of alcohol in combination with coffee. After all, everything is good in moderation! But it's delicious.

Start with one of these phrases

Now that you've reviewed the menu and made your selections, it's time to order!

When you approach the counter, you will have to say little more than “Coffee, please.” Here are some simple phrases that will help you order coffee like a local.

Simple and polite

“Hello. I’d like a small latte, please.” "Hello. I'd like a small latte, please."

Fast and informal

“Could I have a medium coffee to go?” “Can I have a medium coffee to go?”

“Can I get a large piss for here?” “Can I have a large mocha, here?”

“I'll take a small coffee and a donut, please.” “I’d like a small coffee and a donut, please.”

Ask about the menu

“Hello. Do you have any low-calorie drinks?” "Hello. Do you have low calorie drinks?

(cashier answers)

“Okay, I'd like a large green tea, please.” "Okay, I'd like a large green tea, please."

Ask the cashier how he's doing and you'll also practice having a friendly conversation

“Hi. How are you doing?” "Hello how are you doing?"

(the cashier answers and asks how you are doing)

“Great. Okay, I'd like a large black coffee to go, please.” "Wonderful. Okay, I’d like a big black coffee, please take it with you.”

What you need to know about coffee

  • In a proper cappuccino, the foam does not exceed 1 cm in height. There is little caffeine here, but, most importantly, there is cinnamon, which even in small doses has a positive effect on metabolism. You can whip the milk with a blender or a hand whisk. Many people, even those who call themselves baristas, are sure that cappuccino is 1/3 milk, 1/3 milk foam and 1/3 espresso. But this recipe is not a cappuccino, but a macchiato! Office workers often take cappuccino: the drink takes a relatively long time to drink and does not have a strong taste, which is conducive to conversation.
  • Mocha (mocha) is a chocolate and coffee drink. Some coffee shops add mint syrup to mocha to add freshness. Often, 20 ml of cream is added to mocha and due to this, one of the two servings of espresso is cut. Mocha is adored by young people from the category of high school students and first- and third-year students.
  • Irish coffee is a mixture of coffee and whiskey with a mild taste. 30 ml of any whiskey + 2 teaspoons of cane sugar (preferably unrefined) + 120 ml of coffee freshly brewed in an air or French press + a layer of whipped fat (from 35%) cold cream. = 180 + 220 ml. Irish coffee is often prepared in layers, which is unacceptable. Irish coffee is loved by middle-aged and older men. There is enough whiskey in the composition - young people are not ready for such a taste. Irish is actually cooked disgustingly in most places. So, if you order this coffee and say that they don’t know how to make it here, you can pretend to be a coffee gourmet (!). This is a note.
  • Do you want to reveal the flavor bouquet? A good alternative is freshly brewed coffee. The portions are large, like Americanos, but the coffee is not diluted with water, but brewed.
  • Espresso is a squeeze of coffee flavor, and the ratio “10 g of beans - 80 ml of water” cannot be neglected. Especially if you drink pure espresso rather than using it as an ingredient in another drink. It is ordered by both coffee connoisseurs and those who want to be known as coffee connoisseurs. If you are one of the latter, don't forget to ask for a glass of water with your drink.
  • Americano is loved by those who are just starting to get acquainted with real, non-sublimated coffee. Since there are always more beginners than experts, Americano is one of the most popular coffeehouse drinks.

Review the rules of cafe etiquette

If you're visiting a coffee shop for the first time in North America, here are some notes on cafe etiquette.

For general knowledge, the Smithsonian Institution offers a short, informative video about the history of coffee culture in the United States.

  • As a rule, sugar or sweetener is given out at the checkout, and then you add it to your drink yourself. If you are not sure, you can ask: “Where can I find the sugar/sweetener?” (Where can I find sugar/sweetener?)
  • The cashier may ask your name. That's what it's for. When your coffee is ready, the barista (the person who makes your coffee) will shout your name, so remember to listen carefully.

Sometimes instead of a name they say the name of the order. For example, instead of saying “Alex?” (Alex?), the barista will say: “Large latte to go?” (Large latte to go?)

  • If you just ask for "coffee", it will be brewed black coffee. If you want espresso, order a coffee drink that includes it (such as a cappuccino, latte, Americano, etc.) or a straight "espresso" (it is also quite common to order a "double espresso" or two shots of espresso ).
  • In a cafe, many people want to quickly buy coffee and leave. If you need more time to read the menu, step out of line and tell the person behind you: “You can go ahead. I'm still deciding.” (Go ahead. I'm still choosing.)
  • If you want to plug your laptop or phone into an outlet, it's a good idea to ask the person or people sitting next to the outlet. Before you reach for the outlet across their table or behind someone's chair, simply say: “Hi, I need to plug in my laptop. Thanks.” (Hi, I need to connect my laptop. Thanks.)
